It is time for me and you to take a lesson from big brands, a lesson that is true for anyone who is interested in what it takes to stand out and prosper. Look at some brands like Safaricom, Kenya Commercial Bank, Samsung, Apple etc. Do they have competitors? What makes them tick? Think about it…

Can a person be a BRAND?

What is brand?

A type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name, a brand is a prudent service or concept that is publicly distinguished from other products, services or concepts so that it can be easily communicated and usually marketed.

Personal branding:-

Take time to do some soul searching and determine exactly who you are and what makes up your brand -YOU.

In the bible, we have many good people who represent different brands. Do you remember Esther… what made her special? How will you describe her? What about Dorcas ( Tabitha)? How did the widows describe her? Naomi and her daughter in law Ruth; good friends yet distinctively represents different brands. Some didn’t even have names.

Remember the two women who went to the king each claiming that the baby belongs to one of them. Different characters aren’t they. Let’s look at Abraham, Jacob and Isaiah. Same family lineage yet different persona. Look at Daniel in the bible. What brand was he?

Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

Positioning yourself well will position you for promotion to a place of prominence. You must be determined to operate with an excellent spirit. Daniel brand for instance was that of a Christian man who was honest, faithful and responsible.

Our role model Jesus Christ, what brand was HE?

Mathew 16:13-15

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea, Philippi, He asked his disciples “who do people say that the son of man is”. And they said “some say John the Baptist but others Elijah and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets”. He said to them, “but who do you say that I am”

Mathew 5: 14-15

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

We are chosen by the Most High, given authority and power to be what we want to be. Let the branded YOU stand out. Everybody has the ability to live a life of distinction (Did someone say Amen…)

Some but a few tips on building a brand

1. Decide your inspirations or values

Have your goals and objectives well defined. The outlined values must be worked on so that they are rooted in you. This will create consistency. For instance; are you the sort of person who puts ethics above everything else? One should focus on becoming an expert in the field that he/she is good at. Avoid establishing one expertise that is irrelevant to your mission, goals and vision

2. Engage in networking

Connect with people in similar goals and experts in your field. This will make you be known. Those who know you will give genuine feedback. They will express your strengths and weakness thus helps in building up YOU brand.

3. Speak up!

Take the initiative and speak up for your ideas. Communication should be clear and consistently. You need to be an active participant in the events around you and in your life. However, do give an ear to other people’s idea too.

4. Create change

You need to be an active force in your field. You need to be innovating and making a significant contribution to your field at all times or else your brand will die out over time. Do you remember some brands that have died off? Find what is your role, what you do best and find ways to change the direction of the field for the better.

5. Play the long game

Friends, look at your personal brand as an investment! The brand has potential to last longer than your own lifespan.
